A Bright New Sunroom

While it can be fun to work in existing pieces into a client's space, we don't typically get clean slates to work with. So when a client of ours moved into a new house and came to us to outfit her gorgeous, light-filled sunroom, we were excited. But let's get serious--we are always excited about design ;)

To top it off, she sent us this really great inspiration photo of her style.

That image was enough to instantly transform the space in our minds. With each project, we all see something slightly different for the end result. So when we have the conversation "what is everyone thinking for this room?" it's always fun to see what we have in mind--how different, and how similar our thoughts are. But this time we pretty much came together in unison:

Natural woods, warm neutrals, whites, muted kelly and lime greens, and natural greenery. It's a sunroom after all!

So let's see a few more inspiration photos of this sort of color scheme:

Those pendants! I need those pendants! Also a blueberry scone would be nice.

Great use of texture layering in this cozy sunroom. Notice how dark the walls are, yet the space still feels very light and airy. Also, if you fear you have a black thumb, fresh cut greenery always does the trick. I find the $6 bundles at Publix to be perfect for this--and they last two weeks sometimes! Talk about getting your money's worth!

I wish I knew who designed this bedroom. Because there are few things that I've loved more than this bedroom. The screened closet doors...the bed alcove...the perfect weight of those draperies...I think I'm spotting natural linen bed coverings. And does anyone else have a strong urge to run over to the window and open it up?

Loving the clean lines of this modern danish home--set off perfectly by the pop of green and the curves in that wonderful chair!

So now let's have a look at how we made the space work. The room is long, narrow and full of windows and white painted brick. The floors are a warm brown tile. A dream of a sunroom and blank slate.

Here's the floorplan:

Every wall in the room is filled with windows edge-to-edge--either to the outside or to the inside of the home. So we couldn't get carried away with large furniture pieces that would block the view or the light from entering the home from outside. The top and right part of the room lead to the outside, and the door at the bottom on that little side wall leads into the kitchen and breakfast nook. So we had to keep those paths open. Another important feature that the client wanted was a that everything remain comfortable as a gathering space for friends and family. So we created two spaces within the one: a small bar height area, and a comfy lounge and conversation area. The large piece to the far left is actually a daybed with a twin mattress--perfect for cuddling and naps!

We suggested a few spaces to place natural greenery--but we recommended getting as many as the clients were comfortable with. I've personally found gardening--even in home--to be quite enjoyable. It's peaceful, adds great texture to any space, and there's a small sense of pride watching a plant grow and thrive (and most importantly, not die). They're also inexpensive decor, and improve indoor air quality. Get over to your local nursery today and find out how you can incorporate some natural greenery into your home. Please do not use fake plants in your home! And please PLEASE do not use silk plants on top of your furniture or cabinets. Wanna impress a designer? That's step one.

Moving on...

Here's the moodboard for the room:

neutral and green sunroom

As you can see, we stumbled up on some navy throw pillows and decided to use that as a secondary accent color to the greens. We love it! We decided to go with wicker chairs for two reasons: the first was cost, and the second was overall durability. A lot of wicker chairs can be very comfortable with good cushions, and those cushions can be easily replaced to update the look of the chair (or if they just get worn out from use). We also didn't want many fully upholstered pieces because of the amount of sunlight coming in. That should always be considered when picking upholstery fabric for your space. If your piece has a lot of color and is in direct sunlight, expect fading to occur, and have a plan in action to prevent it--either light window coverings or a UV resistance (Sunbrella is very popular for this). However, either of these options can get pricey, so we went the most economical route ;)

And lastly, here's an elevation sketch of the conversation area wall:

sunroom gathering space

These clients are natural light lovers (as we all should be!). So they didn't want heavy window treatments blocking out their light. Well, we thought of just about every way to add some sort of sheers or something to the windows, just to dress them, but with the way the windows are spaced and sized in the room, it would be either very difficult, or very expensive...but probably both. However, we did get away with adding them to frame out this comfy conversation and lounge area. Nothing to cover the windows, but just enough to add some softness and texture.

We even suggested a collection of artwork hung in the small space between the windows. We've seen this done a lot lately--even with installing mirrors over windows in bathrooms--and we love it. It's another very clever way to decorate your walls when your walls happen to be all windows. And this wall goes out to the side yard of the house, so it's not blocking any major views.

Do you love it? We do! I want that space in my own house!

Another one in the 3A books.

The Power of Black

Unfortunately, I started the New Year off by getting sick.  Not the best way to kick off 2015, but luckily I had already started refreshing my home a few days prior.  My husband was home, and we kicked it into high gear after getting our Christmas decorations all packed up.  I was on a major cleaning/organizing kick, and it was great.  I LOVE organizing things--my things, my friends' things, a messy shelf at the store---you name it.  My mom says I've been this way my whole life.  The trouble is, as with most things we love to do, there isn't always time for it.  So when I had a few days to spare over the holidays, I ran with it.

I started small by reworking and cleaning out my pantry.  The thrill of a completed project spurred me on to other areas (my gift wrapping bin, my closet (still needs some work), our filing cabinet (Jon did all of this one) and the top of our desk.  And we hung some window treatments in the sitting area off of our kitchen that has been bugging me since we moved into this house over two. years. ago.  Procrastination, much?  (excuse the quality iPhone photo).  Now to find a new light fixture...

Anyway, it was great to conquer so many areas in our home that we'd been putting off.  And I really did start my year feeling like I was on top of things!  For those of you who don't know where to begin tackling the chaos in your home, I have some tips.

Start small.    When I started doing my pantry, I started with one shelf.  When I saw how great that one was to complete, I moved on to the others.  Finishing a project will give you the confidence and desire to move on to another, bigger project.  Start with the junk drawer (don't we all have one?) and go from there!  The same goes for home decor updates.  Dana touched on some great ideas to help you refresh your home, and none of them were too overwhelming.  Making a small change in one area will give you the fuel you need to tackle the rest.  You just have to start.

Make a list.  Write out areas you want to improve in your home and then rank them in order of what you'd like to complete first.  Start with ones you can achieve NOW and start planning for ones you want to achieve this week, this month, this year.  Having everything on paper will hold you more accountable and be a great reminder for your goals.

Get to work.  Easier said than done I know.  But carve out time in your schedule to tackle things on your list.  Scheduling an hour or two (or however many you need) on a certain day takes it from a "one day I'll to get to it" project to a "I'm getting to done at 9:00am on Saturday" project.

Contact us.  If you know you have a room you don't love but have no idea where to start, contact us.  We do this for a living and more importantly, we love it.  We love making a space come alive.  And we want you to love your home!

None of this is rocket science, I'm aware.   But complex things are conquered with a bunch of simple steps right?

One simple step in refreshing a space is painting.  We all know that, and we've all heard it time and again.  And for good reason.  It is so true.  But today I'm going to take it a step further and say the easiest way to transform a space is with black paint.  Before you all freak out and think my sickness has made me crazy, hear me out.

I have no desire to turn your home into a dark, dreary cave.  If you've read my blog posts in the past, you know I'm a neutral girl at heart--white, creams, grays and taupes are my playground.  However, when you throw some black into that world, the result can be stunning.  Here are a few examples to show you what I mean...

These black hallway walls are the perfect backdrop to make a gallery wall really stand out.

Black garage doors.  Showstopper.

A black kitchen island in a light and bright kitchen...and don't even get me started on those bar stools.

via

Or how about a black fireplace...

This bedroom is amazing on its own but that black ceiling takes it to another level.  The entire home, designed by Amy Morris, is stunning.  You can see it here.

A black vanity update would be a great weekend project. Especially if you top it off with some brass hardware...

I still need to tackle our front door, but I'd love it to look like this.

Who wouldn't want to cozy up with a book in this moody library?

Black makes an entrance...

Hopefully you're as inspired by black as I am now.  If it's still too much, maybe navy or dark gray are your guys.  Either way, look for some ways to add contrast to your home in the new year.

If you'd love to but aren't sure where or how to begin, that's why we're here!  Give us a shout if we can be of assistance in making your home a place you love!

Happy belated 2015!  Now get to writing those to do lists!

I dream of Mud Rooms

After a nice Christmas break, life is back to normal in the Nguyen casa. Per usual, when Angie came home from school yesterday she dropped her book-bag, lunch box, gym bag and shoes all by the front door and they stayed there until the next morning. It had me wishing for a beautiful mudroom to neatly store all of our bags and shoes, much like the ones below.

Instead, I have to settle for wall hooks. Boooo!

As I mentioned before, our house has little storage and what storage we do have is packed. One of our many projects is to extend our laundry room into a portion of the sun room for extra storage space. So, until then hooks will have to do. By the way, I hope to give you guys a look at our progress in the sunroom soon. I have been waiting FOREVA on the window shades to be delivered. Apparently, they have made there way to a port in California that is currently on strike. Okay, back to wall hooks.

So far, Pottery Barn's cast iron row of hooks is the top contender.

If you are interested in creating a mudroom or a organizational area but do not want to go down the custom route, there are some really great hall trees on the market. Hall trees are especially great for renters as they do not need to be affixed to the wall. Here are two that I really like.

Until next time, lovelies.

Mirror, Mirror...

I've been considering (eventually) replacing the mirror in our guest bath for something less...square plate glass looking. Something more decorative and less builder-grade. Much like Jessica did in this bathroom facelift:

While I've found a few bathroom mirrors that I'll keep in my back pocket, what I've really been loving are all the really unique decorative mirrors out there. While I'm not short on decorative mirrors in my house, I sure wish I could use some of these somewhere.

Mirrors are one of those things that can cost you quite a bit, depending on where you get them. I find that mirrors are best to stake out at local discount home decor stores. I've seen some great ones at Homegoods! Mirrors are a great addition above a console, in a gallery wall collection, above a sofa...I could go on.

Here are some good inspirations to get you thinking:

1. Stag Antlers Mirror from Anthropologie : Because who wouldn't want this?

2. Montara Mirror from Serena and Lily : Simplistic, clean, slightly nautical. Plus one of my favorite combos of white and wood.

3. Two-Tone Hex Mirror from Target : I could see this just about anywhere. An old vintage powder bath, a modern space, a chic teen's bedroom.

4. Queen Anne's Lace Mirror from Anthropologie : A light softer version of the classic sunburst mirror. Great in a feminine bedroom.

5. Salvaged Mansard Scroll Mirror from Restoration Hardware : I love the architectural forms in this mirror. An older home with a lot of character might benefit from this. Or perhaps even a new home with a minimalist design scheme--all the charm lies in the shape while the white remains clean and minimal.

6. Copper Square Metal Reese Mirror from World Market : These cute mirrors come in rectangles as well. I thought, individually, they would make a great addition to a collage wall, or even grouped by themselves. I've always loved mirrors and frame that hang from a rope or chain.

7. Euphoria Mirror from Target : another interesting rendition of the sunburst mirror, but definitely a stronger and more statement-making one; very architectural.

8. Hexagon Monte Mirror from West Elm : I love this mirror. I only wish it were a little larger because it would be perfect in my guest bath! It's simple, but the modern metallic finish and shape make it the perfect interesting mirror--horizontal OR vertical!

9. Metal Porthole Mirror from Target : I see porthole mirrors a lot in antique stores, only they're made from actual portholes (a Gulf Coast thing I guess?). Anyway, they're usually huge and heavy and expensive. But also wonderful. I'm glad someone took the time to create a faux porthole mirror. It's almost as cool as the real thing!

Maybe you have a blank spot in your home where you can use something like one of these. Some of these aren't such a bad price, either, depending on what you need it for, but a select few may need to wait for a good sale :)

Until next time, folks!

Seven Great Finds

Happy New Year's lovelies! Can you believe 2014 is just about over with?! What a great year it was for us. Looking forward to what 2015 has in store.  Before I sign off for the evening's festivities, I thought I would share some items that I am currently digging.

1 /// Sterling Table Lamp - Great color and shape. This vintage inspired lamp believe it or not is from Urban Outfitters.  We have been finding a lot of great accessories on their website lately.

2 /// Reeve Mid Century Coffee Table - I love a good coffee table, especially one that offers storage.

3 /// Cosmo Pendant - The iron pendant offers both structural interest and an earthy aesthetic that I like.

4 /// Andre Bar Stool - A bar stool that is reminiscent of the Eames lounge chair. Black paired with walnut, yes please!

5 /// Jai Vasicek Cushions - I currently have a love affair with all things designed by Aussie artist Jai Vasicek. These cushions are no exception. Based on my instagram feed, it appears that Australians in general are so stylishly cool.

6 /// Estilo Cabinet - As a person with limited storage in their house, I appreciate attractive storage pieces. The teak wood work on this cabinet is beautiful.

7 /// Zig Cotton Dhurrie - Can we all just say FRINGE! The alternating eyelash fringe makes this rug a show stopper. Hope to be able to use it in a project soon.

After looking at my picks, there is no denying that I have a thing for Mid Century Modern :) Hope you all have a Happy New Year's and be safe.

See ya next year!

5 Ways to Refresh Your Home After the Holidays

We're back from the break! How was everyone's Christmas??

We got the rare opportunity to spend Christmas Eve and Christmas Day in our own home, as our small little family unit. Compared to the normal hustle and bustle and traveling craziness that we usually encounter, making it to all our spread out families, I'll admit it was really nice. We did some traveling, but there's nothing like waking up to your own tree in your own home on Christmas. And our daughter--nearly two--is starting to really get into the whole deal. I love watching her experience all the fun things the season brings for children.

I hope your own circumstances allowed you to enjoy your holiday as well!

Soon enough though (not quite yet for us, even though our hand-chopped tree is beyond crispy at this point), we'll all have to transition back into post-holiday normalcy. Decorations come down, vacation days run out, (in general you avoid the scales for at least two weeks! eek!) and sometimes that can be a little melancholy. My home always feels naked after I take down my Christmas decorations. How about you?

A great way to find enjoyment in packing up all those boxes is to give your home a tiny facelift in the process. Just a little refresher--something else new to look at and look forward to.

Here's 5 easy things you should consider to give your home a little post-holiday refresher:

1. Clean Up and Give Away

image via

image via

Having a hard time fitting all those new socks in with your old ones? Did you get some new dish towels and now have way more than you need? Or maybe you are considering buying more hangers for your closet?

Or if you're like me, your living room has turned into the place you always dreaded before you had kids: a toy emporium.

While you're putting away your new loot, take the time to clean out the things you no longer use. I like to use the "1 year" rule--that is, anything I haven't used or worn in the past year gets put in a bag and given away. With kids, I cut this time down to a few months, since kids grow into new learning stages very quickly and therefore outgrow the enjoyment of certain toys.

Cleaning and making more usable space in your home never made anyone feel unaccomplished. We do it at least twice a year. It feels sooo good.

2. New Hardware

image via

image via

I've posted about the benefits of this before, but this year I got to see it in person at my in-laws' home. They removed all the outdated shiny brass hardware in their guest bath and replaced it with contemporary matte oil rubbed bronze hardware. It looks so great! I can't get over what a difference it made.

Replacing all the hardware in your home can be very overwhelming (and add up more quickly than you'd imagine), so take the opportunity to start small. Do your kitchen knobs and pulls, your door knobs, or a bathroom.

3. New Throw Pillows

image via

image via

I am so guilty of keeping throw pillows way past their prime. Picking a few for your sofa or your bed (or both!) will make such a difference. Get in there with some pops of color and texture--pillows are an easy and inexpensive way to get creative.

Plus, nearly every store (home decor stores included) are having great sales right now. Take advantage of it!

4. New Linens

image via

image via

Like I just stated above, take advantage of all the sales going on right now!!

Get some new hand towels for your guest bath, new sheets for your bed, or a new tablecloth for your dining room table (if you use one). I love getting new sheets. Especially after the first couple of washes when they're crisp but cozy, and fit perfectly on your mattress without wrinkling and bunching, or without having to find that "bad" corner to turn towards the bottom of the bed.

5. Give Your Front Door a Facelift

image via

image via

Don't neglect the outside of your home! It's always a little sad to pull up to a non-lit house after Christmas. The kid in me still enjoys a neighborhood full of Christmas lights. So how about giving your front door some attention?

Spend a weekend picking some new paint colors to try. Or maybe just give it a fresh coat of its current color, or even replacing the hardware. Front door hardware always gets neglected, even if the inside of your home is pretty updated. Most people never enter their own home through the front door so they don't think about it.

Make it a cheery entrance for your guests, just as it was for Christmas.

So what do you think? Those are do-able right?? Personally, I'm going the throw pillow route. As stated above, it's been a long time coming. I'll keep y'all posted on any particularly good deals!

Until next time...
